Over 5,000 people were present yesterday at Tebea, Hunedoara County, for the commemoration of 141 years from the death of Avram Iancu, a Transylvanian lawyer that played an important role in the 1848 revolution of Transylvania, also known as ‘The Little King of the Mountains.’ The event was attended by President Traian Basescu and his wife Maria, Labour minister Mariana Campeanu, Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean, PDL leader Vasile Blaga and democrat-liberal members of the Parliament. The president was received by a honor guard.
The event began yesterday at 11.00 AM with a parade of mountain troops in front of President Traian Basescu, followed by a religious ceremony in Tebea, where Avram Iancu is buried, led by Sibiu Metropolitan IPS Laurentiu Streza. Wreaths were laid and the honor guard paraded too, while authorities delivered speeches and made a historic evocation.
In the speech held on this occasion, Traian Basescu asked people to attend the ceremonies commemorating Avram Iancu whenever they can, because he “fought for the end of serfdom and for national dignity,” which brought him in conflict with Hungarian revolutionist Kossuth Lajos. “Kossuth wanted Transylvania for the Hungarians, but Avram Iancu wanted freedom for Romanians too,” Basescu said, quoted by Mediafax. After the speech, the president talked with the people attending the event, took photos with them, but was also booed by some. The protesters shouted slogans like: “Thief,” “You destroyed the CFR,” “Basescu out” and “Resignation.”

Someone called him “an illegal president” and Traian Basescu asked her laughing “Me, illegal?” and walked by. When the president entered a tent, several people shouted at him: “Get out, you ordinary mutt.”
The president was also booed when he laid a wreath. Participants were waving tricolore flags, along with many banners of the ‘New Right’ organisation, although the access with flags and banners of political parties was prohibited during the ceremony. Organisers recommended participants to behave decently, as loud noises (songs, slogans) were against the commemorative character of the event. The Tebea commemoration closed road traffic on DN 76 km 38+500 – 38+600 between 11.00-11.15 AM and 2.00-2.30 PM, in order to hold the military ceremonial, parades, honor guard. According to the Prefect’s Office, the situation in the field did not allow rerouting traffic on other roads. While the restriction was in place, only ambulances and other emergency response vehicles (SMURD, ISU, gendarmes, police) were allowed to cross the area.
Avram Iancu, one of the leaders of the 1848-1849 revolution in Transylvania, was born in 1824 at Vidra, in the Apuseni Mountains, in a wealthy family. He studied law at Cluj, died on September 10, 1872 at Baia de Cris and was buried in Tebea, Hunedoara County, near the ‘Oak of Horea.’
While leaving Tebea, president Traian Basescu said he should go to Rosia Montana to pay a visit. Before that Basescu told the audience the mining project stands no chance, due to the ‘games played by the USL parties’. “The law for this issue is unconstitutional; we are talking about a private company, the law will not get the go-ahead from the Constitional Court’.
